The first coin type known that was made of silver.  Prior coinage was made of a silver/gold blend called electrum.  

 

The Lion and Bull confronting each other is the same design as the gold coins of this type.  The silver/gold system allowed a fixed exchange between two metals, with fixed values and different weights, used for commerce in the ancient world.
